Today’s great challenges are network challenges. While we increasingly have the technology, capital and will to solve them, they are intractable because we don’t have the loose networks of trust that we need to smooth the way. The Serendipity Institute is dedicated to building an engaged and vibrant network of change makers who remove friction across industries, countries and companies. While strong networks exist within geographies and within conference communities, they don’t exist between them and this is the challenge we resolve. We do this by linking and building trust between existing global leadership networks to build trust and remove blockers to changing the world. We bring together groups of 50-100 leaders at major business events, with the goal of starting to link their networks and ability to cut red tape. At each salon, we discuss a question, the most important question that participants can start to solve in 90 minutes. In the process, we seek to build trust, strong social bonds and provide immediate, practical value for all participants with the intention of opening their network to goodwill – to decrease the degrees of Kevin Bacon. At each gathering of the Serendipity Institute, we discuss a question, the most important question that we can start to solve—over dinner. Each event starts with a unique collaborative experience that brings us together and helps to frame the conversation. We then explore the question through conversations that are structured by small groups. At the end of the meal, we lay out a key challenge that we are facing. Those who feel the spirit of giving offer five minute favors: advice, resources and connections that could help others at minimal risk, effort and cost to themselves. Over coffee, we identify the next, most important question that can be answered over dinner. Participants are offered the opportunity to join the Circle of Serendipity and learn answers that the next group comes up with and to ask them.
