European populations are aging rapidly, with one in three people in Germany projected to be over 65 by 2060. This demographic shift increases the social and socio-economic relevance of regenerative therapies, particularly for implants. As the population ages, the demand for medical implants across various indications grows, along with the need for frequent replacements during treatment. The SFB 1270 ELAINE focuses on developing novel electrically active implants, specifically for bone and cartilage regeneration and deep brain stimulation for movement disorders.
The first goal is to create innovative, energy-autonomous implants that enable feedback-controlled electrical stimulation. This will lay the foundation for new long-term medical applications and personalized treatments, through a miniaturized, ultra-low power implant platform supporting all electrically active implants in ELAINE.
The second goal is to develop efficient multi-scale simulation models to accelerate implant advancements and patient-specific therapies. These models will incorporate new methods for simulating biomaterials, electromagnetic stimulation of cells, and result validation, pushing the understanding of ELAINE far beyond current capabilities.
The third long-term objective is to investigate the fundamental mechanisms of electrical stimulation in bone, cartilage, and brain, translating this knowledge into clinical practice. The technical vision aims for an energy-efficient electrical stimulator, autonomous for 12 weeks, fully programmable, and suitable for both human and animal applications.
Scientists from electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, and material science are collaborating on these goals.
