The Shanghai Tiffin Club was formed in Shanghai in the 1840's shortly after the end of the Opium War. The tiffins (luncheons) were started by the British Consul General after Shanghai became a Treaty Port so that the foreigners and their Chinese counterparts could gather once a month outside of the strictures of business. The foreign members were leaders in their communities - diplomats, businessmen, doctors, professors, and others.
The New York Chapter was founded in 1924 by those members who were living in the metropolitan area and wished to continue meeting each month to share their experiences and to discuss current affairs.
