There is evidence of both increasing and decreasing regional inequality in Indonesia, depending on the scale of analysis and dimension of development selected. This is based on a study that analyzes the development of various dimensions such as income, poverty, social conditions, industrialization, and agriculture at different levels such as state-level administrative units, groups of states and districts (Chakravorty, 2012).The study found that there are regions in Indonesia that have experienced rapid development and have successfully narrowed the inequality gap.
However, there are also regions where development has been slower and inequality remains a pressing issue. These findings suggest that the development trajectory in Indonesia is not uniform and there are disparities in terms of access to opportunities and resources. In particular, the study highlights the existence of a "K curve" phenomenon, where some regions experience rapid development and others lag behind. This pattern of regional inequality has significant implications for the bottom of the pyramid in Indonesia.The bottom of the pyramid refers to the socioeconomically disadvantaged population who are at the lowest income levels. These individuals and communities often face greater challenges in accessing education, healthcare, and other essential services. The uneven regional development and the K curve phenomenon exacerbate the inequality for the bottom of the pyramid in Indonesia. While some regions experience rapid development and economic growth, the bottom of the pyramid in Indonesia continues to face significant challenges due to inequality. These challenges include limited access to quality education and healthcare, lack of employment opportunities, and inadequate infrastructure.
