By every industry measure, the green economy is an exclusive economy. It just is. And until we change that, we will never solve climate change.
The Sharing Green Economy (SGE) is the amalgamation of the Sharing Economy (the gig economy) and the Green Economy. To transition workers to the green economy, the quickest path is to create lots of green gig jobs.
The Sharing Green Economy offers a mechanism to start to transition workers without them having to leave their current job just yet. This used to be called moonlighting. Now we call it gig work. And, as it turns out, there are plenty of green gig jobs that can be done, such as:
Planting trees.
Tree maintenance, measurement, and verification.
Clearing debris in forests (wildfire hardening and site preparation).
Taking pollution readings, providing water treatment feedback from their faucet.
Locating methane leaking orphan oil wells and map them in order of severity.
Enhancing environmental data from a computer or smartphone.
Counting bird populations.
Providing photographic evidence of natural disasters.
Measure sea-level rise and shoreline erosion.
Wildlife habitat restoration and invasive species management.
Urban farming and community garden development.
Energy efficiency auditing and retrofitting for residential and commercial buildings.
Sustainable waste management, including recycling and composting initiatives.
Environmental education and awareness campaigns.
Water conservation and watershed protection projects.
Green infrastructure installation, such as rain gardens and permeable pavements.
Eco-tourism and sustainable travel experiences.
Research and data collection for environmental studies and conservation projects.
Build a garden in the backyard.
Composting food waste.
