SHEAR1 Overview

SHEAR1 is a patented asphalt mixture testing device and methodology. Used in conjunction with almost any UTM, SHEAR1 allows users to easily determine the shear properties of asphalt mixtures. SHEAR1 may be utilized to determine asphalt mixture resistance to permanent deformations, calculate pavement rutting, optimize mix design, and perform pavement quality checks. It can be used to check the quality of asphalt mixtures from core samples taken directly from pavement structures. Uniaxial Shear Testing (proven to correlate with Superpave Shear Testing), is an empirical set of tests easily performed with SHEAR1 and a UTM capable of exerting at least 6kN. Results obtained include: - Resilient Modulus - Compliance - Deformation - Phase Angle - Complex Modulus - Hysteresis Originally developed at UC Davis and UC Berkeley by Josef Žák, James Signore, and John Harvey, Dr. Žák eventually finalized the design at ČVUT. SHEAR1 was designed to be a cost effective and practical alternative to Superpave Shear Testing. The result is SHEAR1, a small accessory to a UTM or NAT, that requires only simple sample preparation without gluing. Users only need a 150mm (6in.) core sample or gyrator compactor to create a lab sample.
