Sheffield Civic Trust Overview

The Sheffield Civic Trust aims to: • Stimulate public interest in and care for the beauty, history and character of the city and locality. • Champion the very best design in our buildings and public spaces. • Encourage the development and improvement of features of the city environment. • Promote and organise co-operation in the achievement of these objectives The Trust is organised into various Working Groups to achieve these aims. The Working Groups include but are not limited to the following: Design Reviews which are the SCT’s focused consideration of specific planning applications which influence planning decisions. Sheffield Debates and Events well attended provocative sessions discussing burning topics such as Sheffield’s empty shops; the significance of beauty; the Tinsley cooling towers; and the continued redevelopment of the city. Heritage Open Days opens access to significant buildings in the city. This successful, annual event ensures that the public can see inside spaces and buildings of all kinds – private, commercial, religious, heritage, industrial – to which they would not normally have access. SCT co-ordinates Sheffield’s contribution to this important event in the calendar when we can all learn more about our built environment and appreciate some of its gems of historical and artistic merit. Founding The Sheffield Design Awards, alongside RIBA Yorkshire, which is a biennial celebration to encourage the best in architecture, urban design and landscaping.
