Shipwrecks Inc. (doing business as Shipwrecks Incorporated™) does all sorts of shipwreck related activities, ranging from archival research and scientific surveys (magnetometer and side-scan search) to obtaining salvage rights, conducting archaeological salvage, shipwreck identification, handling media inquiries, publishing, and marketing of artifacts. It also maintains shipwrecks.com, which is the longest running website devoted to shipwrecks on the internet. The original Shipwrecks Inc., with pioneer underwater archaeologist E. Lee Spence as president, was issued the first license ever issued in the state of South Carolina for the salvage of an historic shipwreck. The wreck site included two iron hulled steamers that had been lost while attempting to run the Federal blockade of Charleston, South Carolina. The two shipwrecks were the screw steamer Georgiana, which was owned by George Alfred Trenholm, who was the historical basis for Rhett Butler in "Gone With The Wind," and the sidewheel steamer Mary Bowers.
