The Problem:
Runners have no way of accurately knowing when their shoes are worn out. All shoes rely on foam material to support the foot, which wears down as force is applied. The foam cannot be inspected visually, which hampers the runner’s ability to know when the shoes are worn out. When a shoe is worn out it no longer gives the support and cushioning needed to prevent injuries.
Current Methods:
The most common way runners determine if their shoes are worn out is to visually inspect the exterior of the shoes to see if they look worn, or they wait until they experience pain while running. The current method of advising runners is to give a 300-500 mile life recommendation for new shoes.
Our Solution:
ShoeSense has developed a product that measures the force felt by the runner through the shoe. This information is tracked over the life of the shoe and is displayed for the user through the user profile section of our application.
ShoeSense consists of an accelerometer that measures the peak force felt by the runner. The sensors measure the force felt in a new shoe, and our patent-pending model alerts the runner when the force is too great and can cause injury. The electronic transmitter is attached to the upper of the shoe and can be removed and recharged. Data stored on the sensor is transmitted via Bluetooth technology to the user’s phone and/or computer.
