As an MBA student I was required to take a course called 'International Field Study.' China seemed like the best place for someone studying supply chain, like myself. I knew about Susan Pearl, where the pearls are strung, from my Mom. She does business in Shanghai, and colleagues from her company always takes visitors to Susan Pearl because of their great products and friendly staff.
I bought pearls from Susan Pearl for my classmates and sold out with requests for more. I went back the next day for a bigger order so I'd have a few to take home, and ended up talking with a small business owner from Canada. She ran her own jewelry business and we chatted for 6 hours while my pearls were made. Her one piece of advice: don't wait to do this seriously.
So I put together a business plan of how to import these pearls. Today I hope to bring you a luxury product that's versatile enough for every day wear. The pearls are from freshwater farm raised mollusks, and the unusually colored ones are laser dyed.
