Smart Connected Vehicles Innovation Centre Overview

The University of Ottawa launched the Smart Connected Vehicles Innovation Centre (SCVIC) in October 2021 in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering. Located in uOttawa’s Kanata North campus, this exciting new facility focuses on research related to the connectivity, sustainability, and physical and cyber security of vehicles and networks. A cost-effective experimentation and testing centre plus collaboration-oriented space, the SCVIC serves as a catalyst and nucleus for connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) innovation and tech development. The Centre also enhances the existing CAV ecosystem in Ottawa by providing added research capacity, leadership, agility, and multi-layered collaboration for stakeholders and partners. Dr. Burak Kantarci, the SCVIC’s founding director is a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Ottawa. He leads a diverse research team that has the critical skills and experience to develop and commercialize CAV technologies. These include wireless, IoT, mobile computing, networks, cybersecurity, AI, signal processing, cloud and fog systems, and machine and deep learning for mobile systems. SCVIC research team is the foundation of an expanding network of local experts who will facilitate the training, resource and research excellence that are the hallmarks of a fast-growing tech hub.
