SmartMek helps smallholder farmers and agri-entrepreneurs manage their enterprises more sustainably and more profitably. Our vision is a Bangladesh where smallholder farmers - no matter where they may be - have access to the products, services and information that they need to thrive. We seek to become the leading provider of these three elements to Bangladesh’s 17 million farm families and the agri-enterprises that support them.
SmartMek was founded in 2019 by Jeremy Davis, an international development professional, who, after working on the ground with rural communities in Asia, Latin America and Africa for the past 20 years, believes that agricultural development is best done by treating smallholder farmers as valued customers.
In its initial stages, SmartMek is focusing on solutions related to scaling agricultural mechanization and improving the competitiveness of owner-entrepreneurs seeking to rent out their agricultural equipment and machinery, such as combine harvesters, tractors and rice transplanters. Employing an “Uber-for-Tractors” concept, SmartMek uses digital technology developed by Hello Tractor to match farmers with machine owners and then, through a team of sales agents, helps them manage the job from start to finish from booking to scheduling to logistics to payment. To further enhance machine owner competitiveness, SmartMek offers an additional suite of services that encompass the whole life cycle of machine ownership and address critical supply chain issues. These consist of provision of spare parts, maintenance and repair (including emergency on-site assistance); sourcing and placement of qualified drivers; and machine and equipment retail and financing.
