Smith College LASO (Latin American Student Organization) Overview

The Latin American Students’ Organization (LASO) is an organization that represents, celebrates, and supports Smith students who identify as Latin American and/or Latinx/a/o/e. The word Latinx refers to people who have roots, diasporic, heritage, connections with Latin America. LASO members and Latin American or Latina/o/e/x individuals may be from all races, colors, ethnicities, countries of origin/nationalities (are not limited to Latin American countries), legal statuses, language abilities, physical appearances, socio-economic statuses, familial histories, identities, political ideologies, sexual orientations, gender identities and representations, (dis)abilities, and health conditions. LASO’s purpose is to create a network of representation, support, celebration, education, advocacy, and community for all Latin American and/or Latinx/e/a/o students at Smith regardless of their race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, nationality/country of origin (membership is not limited nor exclusive to those who originate from Latin American countries), language abilities, political ideology, religion, (dis)ability, educational background, legal status, gender identity, sexuality, medical condition or illness, or any other background, experience, or representation of identity.
