Established as a performance venue in April 2002, Soul Sanctuary sought to become Philadelphia's answer to the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. Operating 5 nights a week with live performances, DJ dance parties, and film screenings, we brought soulfulness and community to Center City nightlife. When dealings with our business partners proved to be unsavory, we pivoted to expand our vision as a nonprofit arts education foundation in 2003.
Over the past 22 years, Soul Sanctuary has produced a plethora of events and programs: open mic events, album listening parties, podcasts, visual art installations, creative writing workshops, a community-based a cappella group, documentary films, interviews, performances and much much more. During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, when the whole world turned to virtual programming, we launched Soul Sanctuary Radio's 24/7 streaming station with diverse music and talk programming that reflects our passion and purpose.
In addition to our more performance-based cultural offerings, Soul Sanctuary has launched two important initiatives in the past year: SICK WIT IT, our health and wellness podcast and live event series where we emphasize holistic practices and the importance of culturally-competent practitioners to aid in longevity and high quality of life for Philadelphia's creative community; and RAISE, our internship program where important historical figures and their legacies are studied and given a modern-day refresh through hip hop culture. Our premier cohort contributed to an EP that is available for a Pay What You Wish donation, to further our efforts in the future.
