South Coast Conservation Program Overview

The mission of the South Coast Conservation Program is to facilitate and coordinate actions that protect and restore species and ecosystems at risk on the South Coast of British Columbia. BC’s South Coast is a hotspot of biodiversity and has over 260 provincially red- and blue-listed species, of which 59 species are federally-listed. It encompasses the rapidly growing human population of the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. The resulting land-use pressures have led to numerous threats to Species and Ecosystems at Risk (SEAR). In such a diverse and growing region, the need for improved coordination and collaboration between stakeholders was identified as a gap in the efforts to conserve SEAR. Consequently, the South Coast Conservation Program (SCCP) was established in 2005 by government and non-government agencies to address this issue. While the SCCP is not a regulatory authority, it strives to work jointly with all levels of government, including First Nations, industry, and other non-governmental organizations to facilitate responsible, science-based decisions that reduce conflicts between critical habitat protection, recovery actions, and land-use. The SCCP aspires to ensure the application and sharing of the most current science and up-to-date practices needed for the recovery of species and ecosystems at risk. This is facilitated through the provision of scientific and technical advice to various levels of government and the private sector to assist in the development of proactive conservation-based actions and policy.
