The Southern Centre for Indigenous Psycho-Pharma (SCIPP) at the University of Pretoria is an interdisciplinary research initiative focusing on the development of natural, indigenous medicines to address mental health, neurological, and substance use disorders. SCIPP integrates pharmacology, botany, psychiatry, psychology, and IKS to explore the therapeutic potential of entheogenic and psychedelic medicines, blending traditional healing practices with modern science. Through local and international collaboration, SCIPP aims to deliver innovative treatments and policy solutions rooted in IKS for mental health challenges in Southern Africa.
The primary aim of the Centre is to conduct inter-disciplinary research and development (R & D) on medicines that:
-are natural (derived from plants, fungi, biological organisms)
-include traditional rituals and ceremonies (music, dance and movement)
-assist in the treatment of mental health conditions (psychological, neurological and substance addictions)
-originate from traditional medicine and indigenous knowledge systems of the traditional healers of Africa and the global South
By integrating what has been known about entheogenic medicines in traditional healing for ages with modern psychotherapeutic techniques, new interventions capable of producing rapid and sustained therapeutic effects in mental health are made possible. The first steps to such a process include the ethnographic and anthropological study of existing knowledge in practice within Southern African communities. This involves a continual process of constructive engagement and evaluation between academia and Traditional Health Practitioners (THPs) that ensures sustained capacitation and collective beneficence in the sector and beyond.
