SPP 2419 HyCAM Overview

The DFG Priority Program SPP 2419 HyCAM (Hydrogen-based fuel Combustion using Additive Manufacturing) employs a highly interdisciplinary approach that facilitates collaboration across various disciplines, encompassing chemistry, combustion science, and additive manufacturing. The main goal is to exploit the design flexibility of additive manufacturing to enable optimized, efficient, and safe thermochemical conversion of hydrogen-based fuels, such as hydrogen (H2) and ammonia (NH3). The hypothesis of SPP2419 HyCAM is that only a comprehensive understanding of combustion fundamentals, as well as the integration of modern 3D manufacturing processes through simulation-based design, can enable the simultaneous improvement of flexibility, efficiency, and emissions in thermochemical energy conversion processes. The Priority Program comprises 10 projects, each with three to four sub-projects (i.e., experimental combustion, numerical combustion, and additive manufacturing). It involves 83 scientific staff members (i.e., 34 doctoral researchers, 18 post-doctoral researchers, and 31 Principal investigators (PIs)). The coordinated and network-building measures adopted within HyCAM enable the systematic, rapid, and interdisciplinary development of fundamental technologies for advancing the thermochemical utilization of carbon-free fuels, ensuring a timely and significant contribution to climate protection.
