The chair for steel and steel hydraulic structures at the Helmut-Schmidt-University / University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg was established in 2020 and is led by Prof. Dr.-Ing Max Gündel. We are a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, physicists and data scientists producing quality research in field of the structural engineering, with a spotlight on steel buildings and infrastructure. Our various lines of inquiry include: - 3D printing of steel components - Condition assessment of steel infrastructure with drones and multivariable sensor systems - Digitialisation of infrastructure and structural health monitoring - Corrosion protection of steel hydraulic structures - Risk-based seismic design of steel structures We work closely with our project partners which include both private engineering consultants and public entities, such as the Deutsche Bahn, the Autobahn GmbH and the Hamburg Port Authority, to ensure that the research we produce it relevant and fit for purpose. With our new lab, operated in conjunction with the chair for concrete structures, we are able to perform static, cyclic and dynamic tests up to 10 MN.
