The main building dates back to 1910 (with various later additions), but the school was founded as early as 1905 and classes began at Easter 1906. It has borne the name since 1927; it became a grammar school in 1938. The first baccalaureate examinations were held in 1944. To date, there are just over 3500 high school graduates. (See school history.) The Stormarnschule currently has 900 students and about 65 teachers. A detailed presentation and overview of the goals of the pedagogical work can be found in the school program. The 2008/09 school year saw the start of the eight-year Gymnasium. Students who entered the 5th grade in the summer of 2008 will take their Abitur in 2016 as scheduled. The shortening by one school year means that some lessons will be taught in the afternoon during the course of the middle school, because the total number of lessons to be taught remains almost the same. Another special feature is the mentoring system. Each 5th grade has two mentors, i.e. students from the upper grades, who take care of them and support them during their first time at the school. This makes it easier for the newcomers to find their way around the new building and to talk to tall students about questions they might not like to ask teachers. This system has proven successful for many years and makes it easier for ten-year-olds to get used to the presence of already grown-up classmates in the same school building, and even to benefit from them personally.
