Sumatra Merang Peatland Project

Sumatra Merang Peatland Project company information, Employees & Contact Information

The Sumatra Merang Peatland Project is restoring more than 22,934 hectares of peatland rainforest in the Merang biodiversity zone in Indonesia, one of the largest and deepest peat swamp areas in South Sumatra and an area more than 3.5 times the size of Manhattan. Climate finance will be used to rehabilitate and protect this critical ecosystem, preventing the release of significant volumes of emissions, in addition to creating a conservation area for hundreds of unique and endangered species such as the Sumatran Tiger. This project focuses on working with surrounding villages through a community development fund, which supports community-selected projects in addition to new livelihood opportunities that help reduce the drivers of deforestation and wildlife poaching. This project is part of the Althelia Climate Fund and implemented by a partnership between Forest Carbon and PT GAL.
