The Hot Spot of Sustainable Democracy seeks to bring together scholars from different disciplines working on democracy across Radboud University.
Democracies are never finished! Democracies are always in flux, and require continuous maintenance and updating. In a world with intense contestation about the meaning and value of democracy, and questions about democracies’ capacity to deal with the urgent challenges facing societies today, research on challenges to democracy and the future of democracy could not be more relevant.
How to make democracy sustainable? What can be done to renew and reinvent democratic systems to make democracies more sustainable, i.e. better able to deal with complex problems, and better able to change and adapt to changing citizens’ demands? What can be done to move beyond ‘resilient’ democracy in terms of defending old forms, and towards ‘sustainable’ democracy in terms of capable and flexible democratic arrangements that can respond to changing circumstances and demands? These questions are intrinsically interdisciplinary, and hence bringing together scholars from political science, public administration, economics, geography, business administration, law, history, sociology and philosophy. We believe an interdisciplinary approach is crucial to come to productive exchanges and original new insights.
