The journey of Teastar spans multiple generations. It was started as a proprietorship by its founder Mr. Sarath Chandra Karunaratne, a planter & entrepreneur in 1974. He ran the business out of his garage at the beginning. Manufactured Ceylon tea was blended, packed and sold locally under the Teastar brand. Teastar started selling nationwide about two years in. A steady rise in demand for their unique blend and high quality resulted in further expansion of facilities although operations still remained relatively small scale. After 15 years in the industry, Teastar turned into a partnership. This was done in an effort to meet the capital needs of the business as they started to attract overseas customers. The firm began exporting for the first time in 1994. Teastar has managed to build strong business relationships with multiple buyers in a number of different countries since then. Now we are one of the leading suppliers of bulk tea and private labeled tea both locally and internationally. Throughout the years, Teastar has managed to cultivate a high level of expertise and specialty in the tea industry. Continued growth along the way led Teastar to convert to a privately traded company in 2007. This was again done as a means of raising capital to meet the long term goals of the business. Today in 2015, the company produces an average of 3 million tea bags daily with the use of advanced high tech machinery. And has the ability to produce over 5 million bags per day, depending on the demand. Furthermore Teastar has trusted large scale buyers lined up in Russia and the Middle East. The board of directors made a decision to enter the North American market in December of 2014. Teastar has now set up its first international branch office in New York. This will serve as the global hub for Teastar operations outside of Sri Lanka going forward. The company now plans to use this as a platform to export Teastar branded Ceylon tea worldwide.
