Thousands of years ago, the indigenous population of the Amazon region found they could improve the quality of the soil by blending food scraps, ash from fires, and livestock/human waste. By blending together these “waste” products, they produced what would become known by the Portuguese as “Terra Preta” or “black earth”, some of the most fertile soil on the planet. This black earth enabled the flourishing of vast civilizations across the amazon basin.
Terra Preta NW’s goal is to use this ancient model to enhance agriculture in the Pacific Northwest by producing and marketing regenerative soil amendments that harness the power of biochar to sequester carbon and enhance soil.
