In 1960, Cleveland’s vic gelb joined the national board of Big Brothers of America, later becoming national president in 1970, and as such was invited to attend a special event in Los Angeles, The 250 Dinner. The event, held annually, was attended by 250 prestigious men who paid $250 per ticket. Three cities hosted a 250 dinner in those years; Los Angeles, San Diego and Philadelphia. The dinner vic gelb attended, in which Carl Reiner was master of ceremonies (and seated at his table were Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon), so impressed vic that he returned to Cleveland and started plans for the first 250 Club Dinner in Cleveland the following year. The first 250 Club black tie event was held in 1971 at the Cleveland Hotel on Public Square (today’s Renaissance Hotel). vic was the first Chairman and was assisted by future chairs Steve Weinberg, Mel Lazerick, Jon Outcalt and others. The annual event became such a success that by the tenth year, the event could no longer cap the number of attendees at 250, and we have not looked back!! Since its inception, the 250 Club has been one of the premier charity events in Cleveland, raising nearly $2,000,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters both nationally and the two local chapters, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland and Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters. As the event grew, the 250 Club implemented a raffle with prizes ranging from brand new golf clubs, electronics, cash prizes and even a brand new Mercedes-Benz! The Cleveland 250 event (the last of these dinners nationally) has prospered due in no small part to the outstanding leadership of second and third generation committee members and chairs, as well as the hundreds of gentlemen who have continued to support and attend. Under the continued leadership of the board and so many past Presidents, the 250 Club now showcases some of the most popular celebrity chefs in Cleveland to compliment an extravagant evening of food, spirits and desserts throughout the night.
