A foundation in memory of an amazing man. Adam Lewis sadly passed away in June 2014 from Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome, an affliction that claims around 12 young lives per week in the UK alone. Adam, a young engineer, was heading to Barcelona to examine a new production machine for his employer, but after falling unconscious on the plane, he was unable to be resuscitated. He was 24. In the days and weeks that followed, Adam’s family were amazed by the amount of sympathy and support they received. So many people visited or got in touch to express their condolences, sent flowers and cards. The airline that he was travelling with when he passed away vowed to ensure that all of their aircraft would carry defibrillators in the future. Over 500 people attended his funeral, and almost £3000 was raised to support local charities. Within days of his passing, friends and colleagues had already begun completing charity events in his honour. Adam’s family, completely overwhelmed by the reaction his passing had caused, came to refer to all of these events as one thing – the Adam Lewis effect. This has inspired Adam’s family and close friends to keep The Adam Lewis Effect going - to raise funds and awareness that support heart health in young people in and around Adam’s hometown, in his memory. We aim to offer free cardiac screening primarily to men and women aged 35 and under, as well as raise awareness of Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome and heart health. We also aim, where possible, to campaign for the provision of defibrillators and training to use them in public places. Adam’s legacy will be to inspire others to make a difference. Just as he did.
