The name of the foundation is derived from Elizabeth Blackwell (3 February 1821 – 31 May 1910) who pioneered the medical education of women against tremendous odds and became the first woman to earn a medical degree in the USA and was the first woman to to be listed on the register General Medical Council of the United Kingdom.
The Blackwell Foundation is an independent NPO providing surgical training for all suitably qualified persons through courses, conferences and fellowships.
