Kathryn Finney started The Doonie Fund on her birthday, April 5, 2020,with a $10,000 personal donation to encourage other black women entrepreneurs to continue to build their businesses in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis. One Medium post, a few emails and 6 weeks later, the fund grew to over $150,000, providing micro investments to over 1500 Black women-owned businesses. The Doonie Fund is named after Finney’s grandmother, Kathryn “Doonie” Hale, a black woman entrepreneur who inspired Finney to become an entrepreneur. The fund takes a holistic approach to economic impact by investing in a wide variety of businesses . The Doonie Fund investment criteria are straightforward. Potential investments have to: a. self-identify as a black woman, b. work on their business full-time, and c. have an established web presence (ex: an active website, shopify, instagram, etc). The fund is purposely frictionless as we firmly believes that black women know what's best for their businesses. Investments are distributed directly into the entrepreneurs’ accounts, within days.
