F.O.O.D. (Fighting Obesity through Offer and Demand) started in 2009 in 6 countries as a European project co-funded by the European Commission (DG SANTE). Since 2012, it has been an independent programme existing in 11 countries: Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden, Austria, Romania, and Hungary. All partners agreed to join forces in developing adapted communication tools in order to promote healthy eating habits during the working day. Benefiting from the unique network of meal vouchers used by millions of workers each day, messages and actions could be led towards two complementary target groups: workers and restaurants. The F.O.O.D. programme uses an original approach to promote balanced nutrition. It aims to improve the nutritional quality of the food offered in restaurants and to facilitate consumer choice through improved information and increased awareness, making the healthy choice more obvious and more accessible. The FOOD programme promotes healthier lifestyles and working practices by giving individuals the knowledge and tools to act. The two main objectives are : - To educate employees in order to help them improve their nutritional choices - To improve the nutritional quality of the meals offered in restaurants by liaising with food providers, such as restaurant owners, chefs and waiters
