The Institute Library is New Haven, Connecticut's oldest independent circulating library and one of the last remaining membership libraries in North America. Founded in 1826 with the purpose of "mutual assistance in the attainment of useful knowledge," the library provides its members with quiet reading areas, a large circulating collection of up-to-date literature, and rich opportunities to engage with each other and the surrounding neighborhoods of downtown New Haven. In addition to serving its members, the Institute Library proudly opens its doors to all visitors with regular community programs and events from the popular Amateur Hour conversation series hosted by Joshua Foer and Jack Hitt to rotating art exhibitions on two floors.
