From April 2023, HMRC are starting to introduce changes which will improve accountability and oversight within the scheme. However, we believe these incremental changes aren’t enough.
Unscrupulous advisors have always profited from abusing the R&D tax relief scheme. They help SMEs prepare claims for work which doesn’t qualify under the guidance, and frequently seem to get away with it! This gives a bad name to providers that work hard to ensure that their claims as are compliant as possible.
That’s not the way it has to be. Honest, compliance-minded R&D advisors deserve a level playing field. One where SMEs choose an R&D provider based on their knowledge, experience and ethics, not just their price.
