Founded in 1993, The Wema Centre Trust is a registered non-governmental organization that was developed in response to the ever-increasing problem of street children in the Coast region. Wema began as a small children’s home that cared for six street girls in a rented three-bedroom house in Likoni. In 1997, due to growing beneficiary needs and in order to build our capacity to implement new projects, Wema relocated to Bamburi-Utange. Since 1993, Wema has reached over 10,000 children through community outreach, education and vocational training programs. Currently, Wema has two children’s protection centres – one in Bamburi-Utange and one in Thika. Both centres run as Charitable Children’s Institutions under the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Development.
