The UNITECH Rainforest Habitat, located within the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (Unitech) campus in Lae, is a 3,000-square-meter sanctuary that replicates the nation's lush rainforest environment. Established in 1994, the habitat is covered by an 11-meter-high shade cloth canopy, creating an artificial rainforest ecosystem for the study and preservation of native flora and fauna.
The habitat is home to over 15,000 native and exotic plants, including forest trees, bananas, tree ferns, flowering orchids, and ginger. This diverse vegetation provides a natural protective canopy for a variety of wildlife, such as forest wallabies, flying foxes, lizards, green frogs, butterflies, and crocodiles. A central waterhole houses native fish and turtles, adjacent to a swamp where ducks and other waterbirds reside. Visitors can observe over 30 species of birdlife, including the magnificent Raggiana Bird of Paradise, Queen Victoria's Crowned Pigeons, hornbills, parrots, brush turkeys, cassowaries, and fruit doves.
The habitat features raised walkways and waterfalls, enhancing the comfort and enjoyment of the jungle walk. It serves as an educational and recreational facility, offering guided tours and workshops that educate visitors on the delicate balance of the rainforest ecosystem and the urgent need for conservation. The habitat also provides research opportunities, allowing scholars and students to contribute to ongoing conservation projects.
In addition to its role in conservation and education, the Rainforest Habitat offers budget accommodation ideal for families, group bookings, and backpackers. Facilities include air-conditioned conference and training rooms, spacious fully equipped kitchens, and laundry facilities.
