The Tall Ship Glenlee Overview

The Tall Ship – based next to The Riverside Museum – is one of Scotland’s leading visitor attractions and an important Clydebuilt link to the past for the people of Glasgow. Launched in 1896 as Glenlee, she is the last Clydebuilt square-rigged cargo sailing ship in the UK and one of only 5 left in the world. As a ship she circumnavigated the globe multiple times, visiting every continent and served as a cargo vessel during wartime. A majestic piece of living history, she represents the very best of Clydeside’s shipbuilding history and our nation’s maritime heritage. As a free visitor attraction and floating museum she attracts more than 230,000 visitors a year who come on board to learn and have fun. She is also a vital learning tool for local school children with schools from across the West of Scotland and around the world visiting and taking part in our school tour programme. Our schools programme is incredibly popular with many local schools returning frequently with different classes of all ages to learn more about a variety of topics. As well as serving schools we are also a floating museum and significant piece of living history. We serve the local community as a free visitor attraction. The Clyde Maritime Trust recognises the importance of the Tall Ship to the local community and are dedicated to keeping her free and open to the people of Glasgow as well as providing the best possible visitor experience each year. We also run the Anchor and Sail boat-building programme. This is a volunteer programme for people from disadvantaged backgrounds who come to our workshop to learn the boat-building techniques and who, construct and reconstruct working, sailable boats. On top of this, The Tall Ship serves as one of the most unique and enchanting venues in Scotland, available to hire for weddings, ceilidhs, birthdays and graduations, as well as a venue for music, comedy, literary events and hosting special exhibitions, festivals or arts events.
