The Central University of Nicaragua ( UCN) was founded in 1998. It is nationally accredited and recognized by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Nicaragua via the Council of National Universities (Consejo Nacional de Universidades). The Central University of Nicaragua (UCN), and its Division of International and European Programmes, is a multidisciplinary academic institution, humanist, ethical, efficient and competitive; promoting the intercultural exchange between nations and cultures, the defense of the environment, science, technology, democracy, freedom and social justice. The quality and competitiveness of UCN graduate professionals, contribute to the economic, social and cultural development.
The idea of the international and European programmes of university was born of a group of academics with ample experience in the education field who took the step to found the UCN, retaking the trajectory of the old Nicaraguan Central University that in the 1970s opened its classrooms to receive students who later were important personalities in the political, academic and social fabric of the country. The new and restructured university has embarked on a campaign of international development, making agreements with universities in different parts of the world simultaneously to have official representatives in countries and regions, for instance in the United States of America, Mexico, Bolivia, Central America, Asia, Africa and Europe. The Division of International and European Programs is directed by professionals with international exposure who had been engaged in multinational projects with several departments and organizations within the United Nations. Some of them managed transnational companies; others are members and advisers of NGOs. All this translates into an endorsement of a global vision of the university’s activities and curricula. UCN PI members have worked with numerous programs and departments of the United Nations.
Internationally, UCN operates as a partner of CONIES, the International Association of Higher Education, established in 2012 in Managua with several signatories of recognised universities worldwide. Within Europe UCN offers specific programmes in the Management, Education and Psychology study areas, mainly as inter-university dual degree programmes. The European Representative of UCN is Dean Prof. Dr. Gerhard Berchtold at the Deanship in Innsbruck, Austria. The German Faculty of Psychology of European Programmes is located in Berlin. The programmes were originally approved and registered by the Austrian Ministry of Science and Research (2013-2015).
Currently the authority and regulator is AQ Austria, Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation.
