UED Magazine International Edition Overview

It was in 2004 that Urban Environment Design (UED) came into existence to bear witness to the changes that were happening to Chinese architecture and architects, and to provide a window to the rest of the world. For 10 years, UED carried out this mission, and in the process it matured and expanded. China Building Centre (CBC) is an allmedia platform where owners and architects connect. With CBC, UED organizes events and lectures to further promote international discourse and exchange in the architecture profession. This year, UED embarks on a new voyage; we believe the time has come for a Chinese voice to tell Chinese stories on the world stage. The UED International Edition is created, and it is a daunting task. Which stories to tell and how to tell them? Many discussions and brainstorm sessions later, we finally decided on three sections that we believe will begin to paint a full picture of Chinese architectural profession. “Practice”, the main body of the magazine, focuses on a single Chinese architect or firm. Through interviews, conversations, critiques and presentations of notable projects, we attempt to provide an indepth examination of an architect’s work and philosophy. “Pin Up Board” showcases new projects completed by Chinese and international architects in China. They might be monumental icons or small foot bridges, the physical scale matters not, we look for projects that impact people’s lives and our cities in a significant way. “Prism” is the least architectural section in the traditional sense of presenting buildings. It investigates architecture’s influence beyond its immediate physicality, and its interaction with our society at large. Architecture is like white light that enters the prism which is our magazine, and its components and effects on our lives are refracted and laid out before the readers like the spectral components of light.
