UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES Coalition Overview

BRIDGES is a global sustainability science coalition organized within UNESCO’s Management of Social Transformations Programme (MOST). As a humanities-led coalition that is not limited to the humanities, BRIDGES promotes transformative collaborations across academic domains of the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences in partnership with diverse communities. Our objective is to foster sustainability science as a renewed, integrated approach that builds from the Humanities, encompassing the Social and Natural Sciences, the Arts and other knowledge domains, through a process of co-design and co-construction that values the relevance of critical reasoning. Within this context, our priority is to put the humanities in the centre of transdisciplinary research where they can play a leading role both in strengthening sustainability science research and in supporting actions for sustainability. Emphasizing the humanities in the context of Sustainability Science serve not only to underscore the value of knowledge resources and critical perspectives encompassed by humanistic fields; it also reinforces the relations and indispensable roles of humanities disciplines within the wider continuum of scientific domains that compose the fields of sustainability science, education, policy and action. The Coalition operates through its six Hubs who are spearheading the promotion of humanities-driven sustainability science: - Flagship Hub at Arizona State University - UK Hub at University of Wales Trinity Saint David - Thematic Hub at Princeton University and City University of New York - Impact Hub at the Club of Rome - Southern African Hub at University of Pretoria - Planetary Well-being Hub at University of Cologne The global hubs are connected and supported by the International Programme Office (IPO) based at University of Wales Trinity Saint David; while liaising with the UNESCO-MOST Secretariat in Paris and keeping the public informed of the work of BRIDGES.
