UNESCO-IOC DG ECHO CoastWAVE Project Overview

The CoastWAVE Project strengthens the resilience of coastal communities in the North-Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Regions to the impact of tsunamis and other sea level-related coastal hazards. Funded by the European Commission's DG ECHO and implemented by UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, this initiative is a crucial component of the UN Ocean Decade 2021-2030. In its first phase, CoastWAVE worked to enhance local communities' understanding of tsunami and sea-level risks, developed better communication strategies for governing these risks, recognized UNESCO - IOC 'Tsunami Ready' communities, and established an improved framework for sustaining the existing Inexpensive Device for Sea Level (IDSL) Network. As the project enters its second phase, key focuses include building collective and common capacities in tsunami hazard assessment and evacuation mapping, tracking changes in the level of tsunami awareness and risk perceptions, and installing additional tsunami detection, monitoring and alerting systems. CoastWAVE 2.0 will scale up the UNESCO/IOC 'Tsunami Ready' recognition initiative and synergize actions within existing coastal resilience projects. A key outcome of the project will be to engage and create dialogues with people operating in contexts where multiple coastal hazards are at play. By fostering collaboration and integrating tools, strategies and policies, the project aims to create shared prevention and preparedness measures for ocean-related hazards, ultimately reducing their impact on coastal communities. Implementation partners include Tsunami Service Providers (TSPs), National Tsunami Warning Centres (NTWCs), tsunami detection and sea level monitoring organizations and more.
