The University of Juba, is one of the 13 Public Universities selected by the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa to have an Innovation Pod (UniPod). Initiative known as the Timbuktoo University Innovation Pod, or Timbuktoo UniPod, is a unique initiative located in a top technical Public University with the objective of supporting youth innovation at this critical time in their life cycle. The rationale for placing the UniPod within a university rather than as a stand-alone entity is that it would thus link to the corpus of research and knowledge that is already in place in the University, through its faculty who are likely to be experts in several technical fields. This kind of expertise would be extremely difficult and expensive to replicate elsewhere, and one of the innovations of the UniPods would be to design the functioning of the Pod in such a way as to incentivize and align faculty knowledge generation with downstream commercialization, in collaborative ventures between faculty and students. The Unipod goes beyond placing equipment and programs in a university. It involves designing or strengthening the university’s Tech Transfer Office and developing or building the capacity to implement Intellectual Property registration and royalty programs.
UniPod is a physical space and creativity center in which students, faculties from all disciplines, and members of the community outside the UoJ can cooperate in innovation. It will boost innovation and speed learning by connecting existing research and expertise at the university with downstream commercialization. The UniPod has equipment and programs that will help to boost the University's technology transfer office and build capability to implement Intellectual Property Registration and Royalty programs. Engineering students, in particular, will be able to design and construct equipment and materials that will enable prototyping, digital fabrication, and interactivity for the future development of commercially viable
