Upper Meadows Farm was devoted to sustainable holistic agriculture since 1987 and achieved Certified Organic status in 1991. We evolved from our beginnings on 4 1/2 acres to 153 acres. We raised pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits, chickens, turkeys, geese and guinea fowl, and cattle, all of which were pasture-based. We also expanded vegetable production from the traditional “kitchen garden,” which remained one of our fields, to approximately 12 acres, that served our CSA as well as other markets. We planted 37 Apple and Pear trees in 2003, in part to establish the "Minisink Orchard Restoration Project" on 8 acres of leased land in the Delaware WaterGap National Recreational area. We made hay when the sun shined and rotated our crops (included barley, oats, wheat, rye, spelt, flax, buckwheat and corn) in addition to flowers, mushrooms, herbs and vegetables.
We sold what we raised at several farmers markets in New Jersey and New York City from early June through early November, and served our larger farm family (200 families) through a Community-Supported Agriculture program, that let you take a stake in our harvest and participate in its production. We harvested almost everything on the day we sold/distributed it, intending that when it was eaten it would still be alive and full of nutrients.
Upper Meadows Farm was shuttered in 2010, a casualty of divorce and the then collapsing economy. The lessons and wisdom gained have been put to use serving to inform consulting clients around the world, via Organic Sage Consulting.
