Vulnerability is a pervasive and perennial characteristic of the human condition. Furthermore, its manifestations are almost beyond enumeration. The fragility that can come with aging and the dependency of disability, the sensitivity precipitated by trauma and the isolated disconnection that often accompanies displacement, the susceptibility of children to abuse and the exposure of parents to poverty, the inhibiting constraints of depression or anxiety and the sorrowful frailty of grief. These represent just a few varieties of vulnerability that can visit anyone at any time. Vulnerability makes no exemptions. It is therefore surely reasonable to suggest that an informed and compassionate response to all forms of vulnerability should be a core pivot of any society. And evolving a language through which we make speak of vulnerability, in a way that extends beyond the diagnostic taxonomies imposed upon its nature, is integral to such response. The Varieties of Vulnerability Project aims to explore this language, and understand the nature of vulnerability from the inside out.
