Decades of armed conflict and political unrest have left Latin America's social fabric in shreds. At-risk youth are falling through those cracks.
To address this, we have focused our efforts on the kids who grow up in institutions waiting to be adopted. In Colombia, thousands exit state care without finding a family and face a lonely and vulnerable life. Their untapped potential is the biggest casualty. But unleashed, it could change the name of the game.
To many concerned citizens, the size of the challenge presented is overwhelming, and it's hard to know where to start or if it's even worth it. We, too, have struggled with not knowing how to love our neighbor well.
But over the last 15 years, Viva Youth has made these young people a part of our family of faith—we call them our Primos y Primas (Cousins)! We've learned many lessons and developed effective, organic intervention models that increase interdependence and project their strengths into a more promising future. We like to think of it as activating youth through faith connections!
This means that we weave a thicker social fabric in partnership with other faith-based communities, kingdom businesses, and social organizations, closing the cracks. In the process, sonship with God is restored for hundreds of young, unadopted orphans, and their lives get a much-needed jumpstart.
With everybody's help, we effectively prevent and combat sex trafficking, incarceration, job exploitation, armed conflict recruitment, early pregnancy, abortion, loneliness, and despair.
