Volunteer Warrior: The Blog Promoting volunteerism through storytelling I'm here to share my stories of volunteering in my community. I hope the stories shine a spotlight on the immense and multi-faceted reward that volunteer work offers. I would also like to showcase how some amazing organizations work hard to make volunteer work convenient and fun, thereby encouraging community members to get active and stay in service. Volunteer Warrior: The Research Investigating first-time volunteer coordination best-practices In the world of nonprofit organizations, volunteer management and coordination can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, having community members on-site can be a swiss-army knife of benefits. Volunteers assist in labor and administrative tasks, they can learn about and spread your organization's mission, and, the increased exposure can be a marketing and fundraising opportunity. However, most non-profit organizations, like regular businesses, have skilled and trained employees on the payroll. In order to manage a volunteer force, a nonprofit organization may need to dedicate an entire role to volunteer management. In many cases where budgets are too tight for this dedication, other staff member's work loads are interrupted or added on to accommodate volunteers. This can add strain to employees and, if not managed correctly, can actually take away valuable time and resources. It is this dichotomy that has inspired multiple theories on how to best manage volunteers. In my research, I am particularly interested in one-time/first-time volunteer management. I am interested in how organizations train and engage their first-time volunteers because most volunteers give their time at only one organization. In addition, what are the best practices that various nonprofit organizations use to activate and retain volunteers?
