Our synthetic biology platform programs commensal microbes to make medicine in vivo, delivering medicine precisely where it is needed in the body. In simple terms, MICROBES MAKE MEDICINE – my microbes make my medicine, and your microbes make your medicine.
Our initial proof of concept is celiac disease, a common immune-related inflammatory disease of the small intestine caused by gluten, by demonstrating tolerance to gluten exposure as gut microbes continuously make the peptide therapy ($690 million market). Currently, there is no treatment option and patients must adhere to a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet to manage celiac disease. Our pipeline also targets metabolic disorders by locally delivering incretin metabolic hormones to tackle obesity and diabetes (multi-billion-dollar market). Beyond this, our platform enables partners to produce custom proteins/peptides to substantially reduce manufacturing costs, increase efficacy, reduce toxicity, and secure new intellectual property.
Vulcan Biologics was co-founded by repeat founder Prof. Michael Koeris (Sample6 [founder, exit], BiomX, DARPA BTO) and Dr. Brian Green (Verenium [now part of BASF], Sample6, Joule).
