Walter Payton was known for his friendliness and generosity. He was a man of the league and created the expectation that athletes should be engaged in their communities. It is hard to imagine life without social media and celebrity causes, but during Walter’s time in the NFL, few athletes were known for making an impact. Walter was different. Mike Ditka, legendary NFL coach, described Walter as the greatest football player he had ever seen—but even greater as a human being.
It was common for Walter to invite teammates to participate in his community work, and the Walter Payton Alliance is born out of this spirit. Our mission is to empower athletes to be about it and do good. We provide opportunities and resources for athletes to learn and collaborate. We prepare athletes to be authentic and strategic in their charitable pursuits. We celebrate student athletes who are doing the work in the game and the neighborhoods. We strive to be the most trusted and valuable asset for generations of athletes who want to change the world.
