The UCT Water Research Group (WRG) is an interdisciplinary water and wastewater treatment experimental and modelling research group based in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and is part of the Future Water Institute (FWI). The vision for the WRG is in developing highly skilled engineers and scientists for industry, research and academia, while engaging in innovative and impactful research with an emphasis on environmental and socio-economical sustainability. This is reflected in the group’s strong integration between research and teaching activities with an emphasis on knowledge transfer between these activities. The WRG has made significant contributions from research outcomes within the water and sanitation sector on a national and international level over the past five decades. Examples of excellence from the group include the development of the conventional and modified UCT activated sludge processes and notable contributions to internationally utilised mathematical models. It is within this background that the WRG strives to remain at the forefront of research developments that involve making improvements to the quality of water resources. As part of our strengths, the group houses a world class laboratory to facilitate experimental studies towards development of better understanding of current and innovative water and sanitation-based systems. Our research vision includes contributing to a better understanding of individual unit operations within wastewater treatment and integrated system-wide assessment of infrastructure related to water and sanitation. Part of the WRG agenda is also to continuously engage with academic and industrial stakeholders on water-related issues, by providing platforms that allow for the connection of ideas and the establishment of strong international links that provide opportunities for collaborative research and benchmarking, which enables the research group to continuously evolve.
