Our research group, led by Prof. Dr. Sarah Weckhuysen, is dedicated to unraveling the genetic foundations of epilepsy, a condition that affects over 50 million people worldwide. While anti-epileptic drugs help manage symptoms in 70% of cases, 30% of patients remain treatment-resistant. By exploring the genetic underpinnings of epilepsy, we aim to drive the development of more targeted and effective therapies. Our approach integrates comprehensive patient phenotyping, cutting-edge genomics, and advanced disease modeling using iPSC-derived neuronal cultures and brain organoids. A key focus of our work is on developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs), a severe form of epilepsy characterized by early-onset seizures and developmental challenges
