Whitehaven Sea Cadets Overview

Whitehaven Sea Cadets is a structured youth development charity working with young people aged between 10 and 17 repeatedly over a long term and run entirely by adult volunteers aged 18+. (Charity number 520384) Through our volunteer led model and without the overheads of paid employees, our operating costs are much lower than other forms of youth provision which has been key to our constant presence in the town for over 80 years and our confidence that we will continue to thrive well into the future. Although we are proud to wear the uniform of the Royal Navy and our cadets benefit at an organisational level from the opportunities that this provides, contrary to popular belief, we receive no funding from the MOD or any other central source. Instead, our volunteers and cadets have spent the past 80 years honing our expertise to be self-sufficient in the delivery of our activities, undertaking fundraising activities to supplement the low membership subscriptions where necessary. We offer a wide range of water and land-based activities and opportunities for young people and volunteers, all underpinned by a nautical ethos based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy. This includes the opportunity to attend courses, camps, competitions and events, take part in offshore voyages and overseas adventures, chances to work for and gain qualifications and to develop life skills, underpinned by adventure and friendship. Through a different kind of adventure, Whitehaven Sea Cadets helps teenagers to develop into resilient, confident young people who can launch well in today’s complex and often overwhelming world and thrive in it whatever they want to do when they leave school.
