We are "Women for Development", a women-led NGO based in Gyumri since 1997. We stand for implementation of democratic reforms, poverty reduction, development processes ongoing in Armenia, as well as protection of human rights and the establishment of peace in the region.
Our Vision
To minimize the difference of social-economic condition between cities and remote communities in Armenia and to promote peace building in the region.
Our main topics of interest
Peace Education
The peace education project teaches techniques of non-violent conflict resolution at schools all over Armenia and has already reached more than 30,000. It began 12 years ago and is funded by the Bread for the World (formerly Church Development Service Germany).
Over the past years, a lot has been accomplished: the Armenian model of peace education has been developed, handbooks and visual aids have been published. Teachers, students, and parents have participated in peace seminars. Since 2015 the peace education program of "Women for Development" NGO has been institutionalized and included in the curriculum for the teachers' heads class throughout the whole country of Armenia.
Community Development
We currently work in eight rural communities of Shirak region (Northern Armenia).
In collaboration with local municipalities and community members, we try to find solutions for most urgent problems. Most of the problems are common for all communities: There is lack or absence of potable water, roads are destroyed, public transport does not reach them, unemployment is high, and so are poverty, labor migration, migration of youth.
Some of these problems must be addressed by local and state authorities, such as rebuilding the roads. However, there are also problems, which can be solved through mobilizing local resources. This is where WFD tries to support the communities and municipalities.
