Hemodialysis is the main treatment for people suffering from end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). XS Innovations has invented the Dynamic AVF, a device that can open and close the anastomosis (surgical connection) between a major artery and a vein in the arm, needed for hemodialysis. The device allows elevated blood flow only during dialysis sessions, as opposed to the commonly used permanent arteriovenous fistulas. The problem with the status quo treatment is the many complications (due to the continuous high flow in the vein), leading to frequent surgical interventions to maintain a functional vascular access. Our device reduces the complication rate and improves the lifespan of the vascular access, thereby improving the quality of life for patients with ESKD.
