YIN MEI DANCE is an interdisciplinary contemporary dance company based in New York City with strong ties to China. The company was formed in 1995 and presents a unique dance style employing Chinese energy direction and spatial principles as a means of creating dance works within the rubric of contemporary dance theater. Yin Mei’s work explores themes of artistic and spiritual significance arising at the intersection between Asian traditional performance and Western contemporary dance. Yin Mei Dance has toured across the USA, Asia, and Europe in venues including Jacob’s Pillow, Yerba Buena, Lincoln Center, The City Center, DTW, La MaMa, Movement Research at Judson Church, Theatre du Chatelet Paris, National Theater of Beijing and Nanjing, and many others. Yin Mei’s goal as a choreographer and performer is to make visible through dance the inner world that lies beneath the surface of everyday life – a parallel world beyond material purposes and goals, stemming from emptiness, filled with the mystery of life.
Before coming to the United States to study modern dance on a grant from the Asian Cultural Council, Yin Mei was a professional dancer with the Henan Song and Dance Troupe and later a principal dancer with the Hong Kong Dance Company. She is now a professor and the director of dance at Queens College, CUNY. Yin Mei has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, Asian Cultural Council Fellowship, Choreography Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts, is a Fulbright Scholar, and has been nominated twice for a Cal-Arts Alpert Award. Her productions have been supported multiple times the Rockefeller MAP, New England Foundation for the Arts, National Dance Project, Creative Capital, Meet the Composer, Live Music for Dance, Greenwall Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and many more.
